Kardashev - Alunea - (10/10) - Metal Blade Records

Image
KARDASHEV  is a Progressive Death Metal band focusing on themes of technology, selflessness, love, and altruism. Newly signed to Metal Blade Records,  KARDASHEV  is heading the charge toward solidifying the sound of "Deathgaze.” From their website, the eight sonically and lyrically immersive songs on the  “Alunea”  album have set yet another high-water mark for the dynamic lineup. Known as the progenitors of the “Deathgaze” genre, that descriptor is evolving as Kardashev continually explores and pushes boundaries. Guitarist  Mirolla  goes on to say, “we’re coming closer to Progressive Death Metal, with leanings in the gaze only momentarily.  “Alunea ” has much more experimentation when compared to previous releases. It’s a very proggy album.” The album has eight songs, and  “A Precipice. A Door.”  Is first. The door begs you to open it, and when you do, you are struck with a face full of vibrant colors. By contrast, the vocals hav...

Imminent Sonic Destruction - Floodgate - (9/10) - Independent

Image
Out of the depths of the Metro Detroit area, accompanied by fire and several small explosions, came   IMMINENT SONIC DESTRUCTION . The band has been described as “Progressive Super Metal,” which seems to fit nicely among the 53,426 sub genres currently in circulation. 2025 will see the release of their fourth album, which features further explorations into the nooks and crannies of progressive metal songwriting. These guys love pushing themselves, and they HATE robots.   "Floodgate"  is the idea that after a significant event in life, artists and musicians alike tend to open up the floodgate of creativity, and let it all out. This album is a celebration of that floodgate opening up.” The album has eight songs, and the title track is first. The entrance is dirty, heavy, even somewhat greasy or grungy, and the groove is simple, but catchy. Those vocal harmonies in the chorus shine brightly however, like a new penny. From what I know about the band in the past, they a...

Tomarum - Beyond Obsidian Euphoria (10/10) - Prosthetic Records

Image
From their record label’s website, “Three years on from their acclaimed debut album, Atlanta, GA Progressive Blackened Metal band   TÓMARÚM   return with   “Beyond Obsidian Euphoria”   on April 4 via Prosthetic Records. Following extensive North American touring since 2022,   TÓMARÚM’s   sophomore full-length in the next chapter in the group’s ever-evolving search for inner meaning, strength and peace. Where   “Ash in Realms of Stone Icons ” served as a prologue in the band’s continuing narrative thread,  “Beyond Obsidian Euphoria”  marks the beginning proper of   TÓMARÚM’s  story.” The album has nine songs, and  “In Search of the Triumph Beyond...(Obsidian Overture)”  is first. A 10-minute opus, it is littered with darkness and technical prowess. But, the song also sings. Like a raven whose gritty croak prophesizes loss and ill omen, the song isn’t without some melody. It shifts faster than most people can comprehe...

...And Oceans - The Regeneration Itinerary - (10/10) - Season of Mist Records

Image
From Bandcamp, “In the frozen depths of Finland's iciest lakes, …AND OCEANS  emerged, fusing symphonic black metal with avant-garde twists and splashes of industrial chaos. For decades, they've been the torchbearers of a genre that defies boundaries—constantly reinventing their sound with each new album. Their latest full-length,  "The Regeneration Itinerary,"  is a transcendent expedition into the duality of light and dark. This itinerary navigates the delicate balance where shadows kiss the dawn.”  The album has ten songs, and  “Inertiae ” is first. Take a moment to consider the grandiose nature of the first few bars…the music is incredibly tight and thick, but also breathes from spacy background elements. Electronica steps forward, and the feeling of the song completely changes. Genre bending, indeed.  “Förnyelse i Tre Akter”  rapid fires at you like an assault rifle mowing down a crowd. It slows to a gruesome grind where you can hear layers being f...
